The U.S. Dental Laboratory industry is a vibrant and growing industry employing over 40,000 technicians operating in approximately 11,000 commercial laboratory locations across the nation. In an effort to ensure product efficacy and the manufacture of quality prosthetics for the dental client and ultimately the dental patient, the National Association of Dental Laboratories has developed the Competency Standards document for use by the industry.

The process of developing such a document began in the late 1990's through the establishment of a Competency Standards/Skill Standards Committee under NADL. The most recent work on this significant project was done under the auspices of an Ad Hoc Task Force on Competency Standards.
